solidworks use Convert to Sheet Metal toolThe Solidworks Convert to Sheet Metal tool is very, very powerful. It allows us to take an existing shape and turn it into a sheet metal part. Now generally I recommend not using Convert to Sheet Metal. If you have the option, it's better to start with a sheet metal part from the beginning and create it from there. However, if you already have an existing part, or if you're on the exam, and they give you a part to download and then create a sheet metal part around we need to use that Convert to Sheet Metal tool. To do that, go ahead and open up the 2.15 sample part here and go over to Convert Sheet Metal. And at the very top of the part here, I can say I'd like to select a fixed face. In this case here, I like to choose the top surface. All right, and notice it does show a little piece of sheet metal now sticking on the top surface there. I can adjust the thickness as well. I can reverse the thickness to push it either inside the part or outside the part. And I do have the ability to keep this body if I'd like to....

learn solidworks flat pattern command and features.If you're working in sheet metal inevitably you're gonna have to flatten out that part to cut it out of sheet metal so then you can form it up to create your final part. So definitely keep in mind, whenever you're designing anything in sheet metal, you wanna make sure you're flattening out your part to make sure your flat pattern looks correct and is manufacturable. So the flatten command works pretty straight forward. Simply up here under sheet metal you can see here flatten, just go ahead and click on that flatten command and it's gonna go ahead and flatten out your part for you. It's also gonna show you where your bend lines are gonna be. As well are a bounty box are the final sides of your part. Which makes it really easy to come up here and click on a measurement tool. And figure out how long your part is, or how wide your part is, and so on. Now what you might not know about flatten as well, is you can jump back out of that command right here. You can also go over here to flat pattern, click on the tool down, and here's the flat pattern here....

solidworks methods for folding and unfolding parts.When creating sheet metal parts there might be times when you need to unfold a piece of sheet metal, do some type of an operation, and then refold that same shape. Now let me give you a couple examples. Over here you can see I've got this cut. And if I take a look at this one here you can see I'm just cutting a little triangle off that corner. When I exit out of that sketch you can see up here that this is a square cut, 'cause I have Normal Cut turned on. If I go over here to that feature itself edit the feature, you can see I have Normal Cut turned on here. If you turn that off you can actually bevel this corner here and that's gonna be really hard to create unless you're cutting this after the fact. But if you're cutting it in the flat state more than likely you're gonna need to turn on that Normal Cut to get a shape that looks like this. Once you have that shape there you can click on Sheet Metal, click on Flatten. And you can see what it's gonna look like in the flattened state. Let's go ahead and fold that back up....

On the sheet metal exam, more than likely you're going to need to use a forming tool and add it to a sheet metal part. You're probably going to have to download that form tool from the testing client as well as the part you're going to be operating on. And in this case here, I've got a couple of different parts in that folder which is 2.12. Inside of chapter two, inside the exercise file folder. Now if we go ahead and look over here on the right hand side you look at the Design Library here and under the Design Library if you click on the twirl down, you can see Forming tools. If you twirl that one down, you can see we've got a bunch of different tools pre-loaded, embosses, extruded flanges, lances, louvers and ribs. In this case here what I have is a new louver which I'd like to add to the library. So the downloaded louver file is on your desktop somewhere and we want to add it to this folder. If you right click on this folder here, you can say open folder. All right I'm going to go ahead and minimize Solidworks for a second here....

solidworks how create Sketched bend Sheet Metal Design.If you have a part that is already in the flattened state, a sketched bend is a really great way to create bends in that part. It's pretty straightforward and easy. All you really need is a sketch with a line in it. So, the first thing I wanna do is go over here to Sketch, click on Start a Sketch. I'm gonna go ahead and choose the top surface right here and let's go ahead and just create a line that goes across this part right here. Now, of course, I can define a dimension from there down to here, maybe it'll say it's 80 millimeters, and then go ahead and just click on Sketched Bend. Click on that, and notice over here, we're looking for the Fixed Face. I'm gonna choose the surface right here. You can see what happens. It's just gonna bend that right up. You can choose to bend it right at the center line of that bend. You can put the material to the inside, of course, to the outside, as well as the bend outside. You can also change the angle. So, in this case here, I'm gonna type in 45 degrees....
